What does the future hold? Can we do more than guess?
Obviously there are informed opinions and extrapolative projections. Beyond those, or beside them, are devices some of us have heard about that immerse the viewer in an experience of the most probable future from that point in time -- but there's a missing variable. Forewarned of certain probabilities, we will act to prevent them...
Dire predictions can have the effect of inspiring action, and so should be taken seriously only as warnings. Given the immensity of our society, however, and the power of momentum, we must bear in mind that not every bad thing can be prevented. Also we must be aware of the extreme complexity of our interactions, and realize that by preventing one thing we may be paving the way for something worse.
...So how do we really plan for the future, if we can't be sure what's coming? These are indeed 'interesting' times, where the future can seem very uncertain. Perhaps the most we can do is to "prepare for the worst and hope for the best". That may be a good plan, but I submit that we area capable of much more.
Many dire predictions continue to fail to be realized. Does anyone wonder why? We create our own reality. We don't have to accept any particular future. We can choose a future and make it happen.
I'd like to think that we will all choose a future free from war, free from deception -- one of unbounded prosperity.
Can we make that happen?
From my viewpoint, the future of Earth and Her People is very, very bright -- but that future is still a ways off. We still have the immediate future to deal with, and a lot of problems to solve. Meanwhile it can be difficult to try to live as we eventually will, within the confines of everything that is expected of us in the present -- but I do think we should try.
We can envision scenarios, and paint pretty pictures, but the reality is that things of the past and present can't magically disappear. It will be a gradual and transformative process, with a lot of work involved.
